Wendy and Mike Monk’s regular look back at old motoring and motor sport items…
Fifty years ago, local racing legend John Love took part in the Team Gunston Chevron B25-3-Cosworth (no.6) Formula 2 at the Rand Winter Trophy race at Kyalami, Round 8 of the SA F1 Championship. The photo shows John about to overtake Peter Haller in his Surtees T35-Ford on his way to finishing 6th. Haller finished 9th. Love’s team-mate Ian Scheckter finished 5th in the Team Gunston Chevron B25-1-Cosworth. The third Team Gunston car, Chevron B25-1-Cosworth, driven by Andrew Thompson, went out just after the start with a failed driveshaft. The race was won by Dave Charlton in his Lotus 72D-Cosworth F1 car.
The SA F1 Championship at the time included Formula 2 and Formula 5000 cars. Scheckter and Love were the highest-placed F2 cars. Team Gunston later acquired Charlton’s Lotus 72D along with two other Lotus 72Ds and research is currently under way to publish the full history of these cars. Watch this space…
