Wendy and Mike Monk’s regular look back at old motoring and motor sport items…
August is a hectic month in the Monk household and so the photo library has been relatively undisturbed for the past weeks, but lying to one side was this pic of one of South Africa’s motor sport heroes, the late Koos Swanepoel. His exploits during his career, predominantly with saloon cars, is the stuff of legends and one of his most successful rides was with an iconic Lotus-Cortina Mk.1. The picture show Koos taking part in the 13th Winter Trophy Races at the East London GP circuit – note the ship out at sea – on, coincidentally, the 13th July 1964 . The 12-lap race was a round of the National Saloon Car Championship in the car entered by Dart Service Station that Koos won overall and in Class X with a race time of 22min10,2sec at an average speed of 79,1 mph (127,3 km/h). Koos, a legend in his own lifetime.
