Some interesting historic images from FMM’s and the Mike & Wendy Monk photo archives, some with a story, others without. This month a couple of ‘who and where’ puzzles…
Starting with the oldest first, one of the overseas competitors who travelled to South Africa for the first SA Grand Prix held on 27 December 1934 at the Prince George Circuit in East London was British ace Richard ‘Dick’ Seaman. Seaman travelled with brothers Whitney (the eventual race winner) and Michael Straight in what turned out to be an incident-packed flight from England that took 12 days. Naturally, there was a welcoming party to greet the overseas stars, one of whom was the moustachioed person shown in the photo with Seaman. Can anyone positively identify the unknown gentleman for us, please?
The second photo raises a number of queries. The car is the Team Gunston Lotus 49 of John Love taken around 1969, but can anyone tell at which circuit the photo was taken, please? There is not much to work with, but the lack of a mountain in the background eliminates Killarney. And the bonus question is can anyone identify any of the people with the helmeted Love?
Thinking caps on! It all helps preserve motor racing history…
