The Historic Grand Prix Cars Association’s Passion for Speed double-header at the beginning of February provided some superb classic single-seater motor racing. The two rounds were held at Zwartkops on February 1 and at Killarney on February 8 and the nostalgic grid of 18 pre-1966 grand prix cars provided plenty of competitive and entertaining action. Quite a number of the cars had strong links with South African motor sport when the country was still a key player in Formula 1.
Led by HGPCA committee member Eddy Perk, taking part were examples of Alta, Brabham, Cooper, Heron, LDS and Lotus plus a legendary 1954 Maserati 250F, the likes of which had never before been seen in SA. The lunch-time grid walkabout allowed spectators to view the cars close up and chat to their owners, all willing to share information on the cars. Interest levels were high, from oldies with strong memories of the cars racing in period, to the younger generation fascinated with the sights and sounds of a bygone golden era of motor sport – all exhibiting a Passion for Speed…
